The Indian Institute of Youth Welfare (IIYW) has always placed public health, sanitation, and water accessibility at the core of its community development mission. Our integrated health projects aim to address the basic but often neglected needs of rural and urban poor communities—especially women, children, and marginalized groups.

One of our most impactful initiatives, “Total Sanitation and Water Supply at Chandrapur”, stands as a successful model of collaboration between India and Germany to deliver real improvements in people’s daily lives.

Total Sanitation and Water Supply Project – Chandrapur

About the Project

This landmark project was implemented in partnership with BMZ and DIZ-Germany, District Collectorate Chandrapur, Forest Department, and Gram Panchayat authorities. It focused on building sustainable sanitation infrastructure and ensuring safe drinking water for every household in the targeted area.

  • 200+ households equipped with shallow sewer line systems for wastewater disposal

  • Underground piped drinking water supply system laid across the community

  • Women and children involved as key influencers and brand ambassadors

  • Significant reduction in the burden of women fetching water over long distances

  • Final wastewater disposal managed through eco-friendly infrastructure

Community Focus

  • Community awareness campaigns on hygiene, health, and sanitation

  • Formation of user groups and sensitization workshops

  • Health and hygiene education for school children, families, and SHGs

  • Local participation in system maintenance and water conservation practices

Community-Based Sanitation & DEWATS Systems

IIYW has implemented several Community-Based Sanitation (CBS) programs supported by BORDA and BMZ Germany. Our focus is to create decentralized sanitation models that are low-cost, effective, and community-managed.

  • DEWATS (Decentralized Wastewater Treatment Systems) installed in Nagpur and Kolhapur

  • Behavioral change workshops and sanitation education in urban and rural areas

  • Technical training to local government and Urban Local Bodies (ULBs)

Health Checkups & Hygiene Awareness

Complementing our sanitation work, IIYW conducts regular health camps, gynecological checkups, and adolescent health workshops in collaboration with PHCs, government departments, and medical professionals.

  • Eye camps, blood testing drives, and nutrition counseling

  • Awareness sessions on personal hygiene, menstrual health, and disease prevention

  • Life skill and emotional wellness training for adolescents

Project Outcomes

  • Improved water access and sanitation for over 200+ households
