Access to clean water, safe sanitation, and holistic village development is central to the Indian Institute of Youth Welfare’s mission for inclusive, sustainable rural progress. Our integrated programs empower rural communities to improve their health, environment, and quality of life, while fostering active participation in planning and managing their local development.

With support from government departments, international partners like BORDA and BMZ Germany, and local Gram Panchayats, IIYW has led successful sanitation and infrastructure projects across Maharashtra.

Key Focus Areas

1. Water Supply and Wastewater Management

  • Implementation of underground drinking water pipelines to provide clean water directly to households

  • Construction of shallow sewer systems for proper wastewater disposal

  • Targeted reduction in women’s burden of fetching water from long distances

  • Treated wastewater safely disposed through eco-friendly infrastructure

2. Sanitation Infrastructure & Awareness

  • Community-Based Sanitation (CBS) systems including toilets and drainage

  • Installation of DEWATS (Decentralized Wastewater Treatment Systems) in slum and rural areas

  • Sanitation behavior change campaigns promoting toilet use, handwashing, and hygiene

  • WASH (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) education in schools and villages

3. Village Development Projects

  • Upgradation of village infrastructure through community mobilization

  • Construction of internal roads, drainage systems, and public utilities

  • Training for Panchayat members and village leaders in sustainable development

  • Promotion of eco-friendly practices such as kitchen gardens, waste composting, and clean energy

Project Highlight: Total Sanitation and Water Supply – Chandrapur

Supported by BMZ and DIZ Germany, along with District Collectorate, Forest Department, and local Gram Panchayats, this flagship project improved the lives of 200+ households through:

  • Household-level water supply via underground pipelines

  • Wastewater treatment through shallow sewer lines

  • Community awareness on hygiene, water conservation, and women’s health

  • Women and children as brand ambassadors of the sanitation movement

Impact

  • Over 200 villages supported with sanitation and development projects

  • Thousands of households gained access to clean drinking water and toilets

  • Improved health outcomes through reduced water-borne diseases

  • Women and SHGs actively involved in local water governance and hygiene promotion
